Gifting Mechanics section added
You don't need to remember to do that every time you log off by the way. You can chose an "Hang Out" activity with any NPC as you play, and the last one you selected will be active once you log out. You also don't have to worry about logging back in sooner (whew), the activity will continue next time you log out.

Gifting Mechanics
There are two principal ways of gaining favor with an NPC. The secondary method is performing a limited number of Quests (favors). Once these are exhausted (or sooner if some quests are undesirable or too difficult to complete at some stage of the game), the player is left with the primary method of gaining favor: giving gifts.

When the player engages in Small Talk with an NPC, she learns the NPC's loves, likes, and occasionally dislikes. (Some of these preferences may remain hidden until a higher favor level is obtained). Loves and likes correspond to Keyword Categories. An item in a category the NPC like or loves will have a positive effect on Favor for that NPC, while a dislike or hatred will have the opposite effect.

For example, Velkort "Likes Exotic Potions", "Likes Unusual Animal Trophies", and "Hates Food". (He also has a hidden like that the player doesn't discover until reaching Comfortable.) In game mechanical terms, this means his favor will go up when presented with an item with the keywords "Potion" (:Category:Items/Potion) or "CorpseTrophy" (:Category:Items/CorpseTrophy) or down if offered a piece of :Category:Items/PreparedFood.

The amount of favor earned with an NPC for an item depends on the Keyword Category and is proportional to the value of the item. For example, Velkort gives around 6-7% of a potion's value in favor and about 4% of a corpse trophy's value. (Anecdotally, e.g., 33 for a 500 value Basic Stoneskin Potion and 0.2 for a 5 value Feathers. The percentages quoted here are based on experimental results and are not exact.) Perhaps surprisingly, this ratio does not seem to be necessarily higher for Loves than for Likes, even on the same NPC.
<br>There are a few exceptions to this rule, as some items have Keywords that alter their value when used for gifting. For example, Lead Figurine of a Goblin in the category :Category:Items/Figurine has the Keyword "Figurine=50", while Brass Figurine has the Keyword "Figurine" (without an equals sign). The value of the goblin figurine is 10, while the value of the brass figurine is 200. When gifted, however, the goblin figurine will act as though it had a value of 50, so a single brass figurine will provide as much favor as only four goblin figurines, not twenty.

Further information on Keywords can be gathered from items.json and npcs.json in the public data at http://cdn.projectgorgon.com/, or possibly through third-party (generally player-authored) tools.

Favor from gifting can also be increased by raising the statistic "Favor Earned From Gifts", viewable on the General Stats tab of the Persona screen. Typical ways of increasing this stat are Civic Pride (offers 5% at the current maximum level of 50), Notoriety (up to 15% at level 93), and occasional Weekend Event bonuses.
