I'm sorry, I can't change anything about the cornucopia today. I understand the complaints, believe me, but...

What's wrong with the cornucopia?

Don't worry. I'm not here to complain about the cornucopia.

Council says this way's better, so this way's better. That's all I know.

Now is there anything else I can help you with?

Maybe... what is it you do here?

I'm Ser Hackley, the Commander of City Maintenance. I'm responsible for keeping this city together. But I'm sorry to report that pretty much every single engineer under my command has been routed to the battlefield., so very little maintenance is getting done right now.

You just need to be patient, we will restore the city to its proper beauty right after we quell the demon problem in Vidaria.

Is there anything I can do to help in the meantime?

Do I know you? Here, can I have your palm for a moment?

(Ser Hackley runs a gizmo over your palm).

You're already employed by the Council! Well that's great! The answer is yes, you can help! Hopefully. If you have any construction background, I can teach you the basics of civil engineering.

(Training available: learning Civil Engineering will unlock Favors).

Okay.}}

[Ser Hackley squints.]

A talking spider, eh? Well... can you give me your hand for a moment? ... You know what I mean. Thank you.

[Ser Hackley runs a gizmo over you.]

You're already employed by the Council! How did that happen? No, wait, I don't care. Are you an engineer spider? If so, I can teach you the basics of civil engineering safety, and you can help me.

I'm a Council Chancellor. We work directly with the Council mages and can act on their behalf. And it's no secret that the Council is pretty preoccupied most of the time. We Chancellors have to keep everything running.}}

It's true, the old v2 cornucopia broke down all the time. Food would get stuck in it and pressure would build up. Damned stupid design. Of course, the v3 isn't a lot of fun. But it hasn't broken down as much.}}

Why do people think I'm responsible for investigating thefts? Ugh! But yes, I did report Elune's story to the constabulary. They made a perfunctory investigation and decided it was Denton Razor's gang. And that's the end of that! We don't tangle with Razor's gang if we can help it. She's out of luck.

No no, don't tell Elune that! Tell her we're still investigating and it's an intricate process and time will tell and there are multiple investigative vectors etcetera etcetera. Sheesh}}

{{Spoiler|Friends Favor|
{{Quote|source=Ser Hackley (Friends Favor)|
Why don't you like your official title of Chancellor?

Typecasting, mostly: I try to be approachable. With a big title, some people are less willing to talk to you.

But the other thing is that my background is from the military, where I was -- am -- a Praetor. Chancellors are the civilian equivalent of Praetors, but technically we're higher in seniority. If the Council were to mysteriously disappear, us Praetors would take over in the short term. Which I guess can be confusing, since Praetors report to Generals. You'd think the Generals would take over in an emergency, but they're too important to ever take on emergency roles.

Naturally, some Chancellors don't think this is a reasonable system. I don't really care either way, so I'm just trying not to rub it in their faces, you know?

So I don't use the P-word too often.

How did you become a civilian official, then?

Well my predecessor for the role, Chancellor Vertak, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. I was laid up with hellfire sickness at the time, so I got stuck doing his job. Made the rookie mistake of doing my best, and now I'm still here.

Vertak's disappearance was a huge blow for Rakshasa perception in our city. He was the first Rakshasa Chancellor. He was born and raised here in the city. But then he vanished, along with a very dangerous artifact.

He couldn't be found? Even by the Council?

They did divinations, but the results were confusing. Supposedly he lit himself on fire and burned to death somewhere outside of the walls. Which doesn't sound right. Nobody really believes that, not even the Council. But they didn't spend more time on it.

If he hadn't been carrying a piece of The Sword of Bigotry, his story would have been forgotten.

The Sword of Bigotry? That sounds... impractical as a weapon.

Hah! It's godstuff. When Ilth Hale reappeared to punish humanity, she wielded the Sword of Bigotry. It just made her more powerful, I guess. It's all sort of symbolic.

The sword was shattered when she was defeated. At which point the symbolic sword became a real sword. Or maybe it was always real? I don't understand gods. But the fragments of the sword are powerful with necromantic potential.

This sliver of the sword was kept safe in the Council chambers. We don't know how he got it, or why. But it was gone the same day he disappeared, so we put the clues together.

Maybe the Council knows more than they let on. I would have expected them to search harder for it!

Interesting.}}
