“Hey there, you seem like an adventurous individual! I have a hobby you might be interested in that could help you out a little in your travels. It would help me out as well!
I've seen you here, but haven't I seen you somewhere else?
You probably have, and it was probably here at the casino!
I'm sure you've noticed that caravan of crafters that comes through here on occasion as they run their route through the countryside. I used to be a part of that caravan.
Ah, that's where I remember you! Why "used to be?"
Yeah, that's a bit of a story!
I am formerly the apprentice brewer of that caravan, my master was Rayar. Rayar always spent most of his down time hanging out at the fight arena here. A few years ago, he had a really bad streak of luck and stacked up some pretty big debt with the house here.
Go on
Rayar begged the Queen to give him time to repay the debt. She gave him until they returned on their next cycle. The Queen is fair, but if you owe her money, she becomes ruthless! While we were away on that cycle, the Queen kept sending her enforcers to remind Rayar of his debt. Nobody was really buying our goods this time, so we didn't raise near enough to cover the debt.
What happened when you got back here?
It wasn't good! I wasn't close enough to hear all of it, but the Queen said something to the effect of Mandibles having a well-stocked kitchen for a while. Rayar asked me to leave and let him talk to the Queen, so I did.
What happened next?
I'm sitting out by the wagon and some mantises come up and start gathering my things and some of our supplies! Then they say to follow them and they took me to see the Queen. When I get there, she welcomes me to her store staff and goes on to explain that I am now in her service until further notice.
In her service?
Apparently, that idiot Rayar convinced the Queen that I was his property because he was my "master." So, he traded me to her in exchange for his debt! Can you believe that? I should have spoken up right then and there! But...
Why didn't you say anything?
He's an asshole for what he did, but even so I didn't want to see him chopped up into little pieces and served as specialty dish. I'd rather have Pigeon Pot Pie than Dwarven Surprise! Speaking of, I heard that after all this happened and they went back out, they got pinned down by orcs and they even had to eat one of the apprentices to survive! I guess I can be thankful I wasn't there, there's plenty of me to go around!
Are you still paying off his debt?
I've already worked off that debt and now the Queen pays me quite well to stay. I do more than just stand here and hand out cool stuff! The reason the Queen accepted Rayar's offer was because I'm a brewer by trade, and she has some special needs that require my expertise. I also have a hobby with ring crafting, that Moxie from the caravan taught me.
