I've given a lot for Statehelm. "For the Council" of course. But mainly for my husband and son. I want to have a normal family again someday, and I'm willing to fight for it. Die for it, even.

We have some of the best magical protections in the world, but they barely work against hellfire sickness. I guess it's a different kind of magic.

What's going on here?

No civilians! No civilians! You could get killed! What are you doing here?

I'm an adventurer. I can help.

Ser Lorentz waves a small grey gem at you, studies the gem, and then arches an eyebrow.

Okay. Okay great. Are you here to take charge?

Take charge? I don't even know what's going on.

Well the demons are busting through the Rubywalls. That's what's going on. The Council Corps of Engineers are helping to repair the walls remotely, but by my count, we're leaking over a dozen demons per hour.

That's not good news.

No, it's not good news. The demons seem to have unlimited troops, and we don't. Our best soldiers are in the infirmary in Statehelm. That's what I thought you'd been sent here.

What are you here for then?

I'm on... other business. But I might be able to help here. Is there any way to stem the tide of demons?

Current hypothesis is that there's a powerful spellcasting demon -- or demons -- who are on THIS side of the wall, and are managing to pierce it from this direction. The wall is much weaker from this side.

If you wanted to find that demon and kill it... that'd be great.

Okay, thanks for the briefing.

You have to hand it to the Council. Battles are happening a days' ride from Statehem, but life in Statehelm goes on just like always. If they knew how precarious this is... would everybody still go to work every day like nothing was wrong?
