Leveling in Lore unlocks small, but permanent bonuses to elemental damage (fire/electricity) and max power.
A new character can gain '''Word of Power 2''' quite easily simply by examining the lore items in Serbule Keep (oddly enough Word of Power 0, which uses cheaper ingredients is acquired from [[Marna]] and requires Favor).
