Some NPCs may interact with harmless animals (eg Deer), but a considerable number flat-out refuse to speak with any animalsnon-humanoids. Others may require a bribe or favor to open their minds to the fact you're more than some filthy animal.
=== Diet ===
Currently what you eat doesn't really change your experience as a deer, though eating meals prepared from deer meat may leave you with a guilty conscious but they probably deserved it anyway so enjoy.
