Geology Overview

Geology allows the collection of gems which are used for crafting and the teleportation skill. In order to raise this skill a player must first obtain the associated Surveying skill from Jaime Fatholm, and use a Mineral Survey.

Mineral Surveys are named for both a region and color of gemstone. A Eltibule Orange Mineral Survey must be used in Eltibule and will only reward standard gems tagged with Category:Items/OrangeCrystal. Some gems are less common than others, for example Obsidians are not as common when making Blue Mineral Surveys.
Speed bonus gems can be obtained if you collect another gem deposit shortly after collecting a previous gem deposit. Speed bonus loot table is based on the location and include some of the rarest gems in game.
Gems are used in various crafting recipes to create Enchanted equipment. They are placed into the Primary Crystal and Secondary Crystal slots as a method to determine what skills equipment will have when crafted.
Many NPCs like minerals as favor. Some will prefer specific gems, some will like colors categories, and a few will accept any of them.
Blue Mineral Surveys leading to Amethysts and Green Mineral Surveys leading to Aquamarines are quite popular due to their use in Teleportation.

Jaime Fatholm teaches Surveying, which is needed to level Geology.
Drummond Stonecurl unlocks Geology Skill Levels 51-60.
Farsight Flemmings unlocks Geology Skill Levels 61-70 and 71-80.

Massive Gems

At Geology level 60, Farsight Flemmings can teach the ability to survey for massive gems. This will give all normal surveys created a 10% chance to be a massive gem survey instead of a normal gem survey. Massive gems can also be awarded from the Povus and Vidaria Mineshaft surveys taught by Sourgum. These require 85/90/95 Surveying and 70/75/80 Geology, as well as consuming massive gems to create.

Geology Mechanics

Types of Minerals and Common Terminology

The Geology skill aids in the collection of multiple types of mineral items. Every Gem is a Crystal but not every Crystal is a Gem.

Agate
is both a Gem and a Crystal.
Rubywall Crystal
is a Crystal but not a Gem.
Glowy Yellow Crystal
is an Irradiated Crystal. Although these are a type of Crystal, they sometimes require Mining or Foraging to gather. This type can sometimes be hazardous to carry.
Cow Malachite
is an Attuned Gem crafted through a Sigil Scripting recipe.
Maximized Sardonyx
is a Catalyst Gem crafted through Geology.
Sapphire
is an "Ilmari Gem," a name given to a group of ten gems added at the same time as the Ilmari zone. Ilmari Gems are often obtained as a Speed Bonus through Surveying.

Collecting gems and crystals is often accomplished through the use of Mineral Surveys crafted through Surveying. Once crafted, a specific level of Geology is required to understand each map.

Speed Bonus

Whenever you finish a survey, a short timer starts. If you finish another survey within that time, you are rewarded with a speed bonus that gives you random minerals, ores, or other ingredients. The pool of random options depends on what zone you are in and what type of survey you're doing (mineral or mining). For example, completing a mineral survey in Serbule will be more likely to reward green or blue minerals, while Eltibule will likely reward orange and white. If you want to take advantage of the bonus, it is recommended to create a few Surveys, take a look at their locations, and plan which one should be done first, second, third, etc. in fast succession.

For Serbule and Eltibule, the timer is randomly chosen from a number between 1.5-3.5 minutes. In Kur, it's 2.5-4.5.
