A lot of running may be involved checking each location. To alleviate this, you may want to focus on one quadrant of the map. Unfortunately as of the alpha, items can not be freely rearranged in the inventory so as you run around you may have to right click all the surveys continually to find the ones closest to where you are.

Geology allows the collection of gems which are used for crafting and the teleportation skill.

In order to use this skill a player must first obtain the Surveying skill from Joeh.

Surveys lead to mostly random gems. You have to make a lot of them to get the gems you need.

Blue surveys are best to get the Amethyst required for teleportation.
