Skill Trainers:

Paleontology is harder because it uses fossils, not regular marrow-filled bones. But more importantly, we don't control the creatures. We use a special technique that makes the creature follow its natural behaviors, so we can study those behaviors.

Grakelsput

Paleontology Overview

Paleontology is a near-useless skill studied by only true seekers of knowledge. Grakelsput's Goblin Clan is known for their study of this skill.

In-Game Description

Studying the past through old fossilized bones. Infamous for its primary research method: necromantic reanimation. The higher your Paleontology skill, the more bones you are likely to find when excavating a site. Higher skill also gives chances to find fossils in the loot of some monsters.

Training Paleontology

  • Grakelsput in Povus will teach Paleontology to Level 50 Necromancers at [Friends] favor.
  • At Paleontology Level 25, you automatically gain the Study Skeleton ability. This is a side-bar Special Ability which allows you to mesmerize single non-Elite skeleton targets, which immobilizes them for 30 seconds or until they are attacked. Costs 30 power, reuse time is 60 seconds, and range is 30 meters.

Gathering Bones

Throughout Povus, there are exposed bone piles which, if you have a Paleontology Pick, you can dig through them to try to collect fossil bones of various kinds. If you lack the Paleontology skill, you can attempt a maximum of one or two excavations on each pile before it is exhausted and disappears. If you have Paleontology, you can sometimes excavate a given bone pile up to three times, and the chances of your picks breaking appears to be somewhat lower. Many fossil bones are ordinary, and a few are associated with quests, while the "Mysterious Monster" bones can be used with the Animate Monster Paleontology ability.

Summoning Skeletons

Through the Animate Monster ability, you can attempt to bring collections of Mysterious Monster bones to a kind of undead life. To do this, first, you have to be in Povus. Then, you need one Mysterious Monster Skull (Povus), one Mysterious Monster Spine (Povus), and four Mysterious Monster Limb (Povus) for each attempt.

The undead creature thus animated has a one in three chance of being either a Skeletal Gallimimus, a Skeleton Triceratops, or a Skeletal Sabretooth. Do note these are monsters and they will attack once they notice you are there.

Skeletal Sabretooth

The Skeletal Sabretooth (appearing in-game labeled as a "Skeletal Cat") resembles a variety of undead sabretooth tiger. It is one of the three possible random summons when using the Animate Monster ability in Povus. Unlike the Skeleton Triceratops and Skeletal Gallimimus, the Skeletal Sabretooth can be tamed by high level Animal Handlers (Level 72 minimum) in the same way as any other feline. The Paleontology Study Skeleton ability (L25) can make it easier to tame them by mesmerizing them temporarily.

Basic attacks include Big Cat Claw and Big Cat Pounce (both are slashing damage). Its Sic 'Em ability is Raking Claw, a slashing vulneratiblity debuff, and its Clever Trick is Big Cat Ultrakill (very heavy slashing damage).
