- You can actually speak Goblinese? Who did you learn it from? Was it Olikar the Vocal? I bet it was!
- Who? No, I learned it through self-study.
- I don't believe you. But it doesn't' matter. I emphatically do not care. I'm here on a scientific mission. A peaceful mission. So just stop with the killing, okay?
- What sort of scientific mission?
- My clan is famous for its Paleontology expertise. ...what, you've never heard of it? It's a sub-science of Necromancy. we bring ancient bones back to life to see how they behaved.
- So how is that different from regular Necromancy?
- Paleontology is harder because it uses fossils, not regular marrow-filled bones. But more importantly, we don't control the creatures. We use a special technique that makes the creature follow its natural behaviors, so we can study those behaviors.
- So the resurrected creatures are just like the normal ones?
- Well yes, except they're skeletal and filled with unquenchable hatred of the dead. Part of the hard work is trying to decide which behaviors are natural and which are a side-effect of the resurrection process.
- And what is the point of this skill?
- Hah! On, you're serious. Well, this might be a little beyond your comprehension as a member of the monstrous races, but goblin society values knowledge for its own sake. Sometimes something isn't immediately useful for murdering your enemies, but it's still worth knowing!
- You mean Paleontology has no purpose?
- I completely understand. But who is funding this research?
- That's complicated. My clan is funded by other goblin clans who repackage our research and sell it to other sages. The pay isn't great, but it beats being gutted by an angry human!
- I'm the expedition leader. That means I take notes when the other team members bring me findings. Oh, and I'm tutoring Brugo over there as a side gig. He's safe.
“I hate being the expedition leader. It means watching over dozens of novice paleontologists. And taking notes! Notes suck.
“Have you talked to Brugo much? He thinks so differently than a goblin would. It's been interesting teaching him. And I have to admit to learning a few things myself. I just wish he's clean up all his wood shavings!
