Hello, I knew you were following me since you arrived in Serbule. I still have spies among the mantises. I figured you would catch up to me eventually. I didn't expect it to take so long, actually. But no matter.

I suppose the big question I needed answered is who sent you after me. Answer truthfully. I am even more psychically gifted than you, so don't bother with lies.

You're Dalvos, right? I lost my memories. A crone told me to find you.

Oh dear. Which crone?

Um... I think her name was Yurra.

Hold a moment. Ricky, do we know a crone named Yurra?

...

Ah, apparently Yurra is an Inquisitor from the Crone Hegemony. So you basically ruined everything. I need to think!

What do you mean I ruined everything?

The Inquisitor no doubt broke your mind and convinced you to join her as a slave. After that, you probably revealed everything about the school... and about me. When she was done with you, she wiped your mind and tossed you aside. But then why would she have you follow me? I suppose you were just one of the very few people who could catch up with me.

What were you supposed to do when you found me? Surely you don't think you can kill me?!

Given that I have amnesia, perhaps you could start from the beginning.

Oh, very well. I will try to explain. One moment. Ricky, turn off the mattersphere so I can hear myself thing! Thank you!

Never mind that -- I was talking to my assistant. Let me get you up to speed, my friend.

I don't trust you, but I'll listen.

There's really no time for that. This Yurra person will be dealt with in time. There's something more pressing: I need you to get rid of Lavorel. Can you at least manage that?

I'm definitely not following orders from you.

I was one of your instructors at Stronmar Academy. But you soon learned too much about the purpose of the school: you were all to become agents of the Council, acting as diplomats, spies, soldiers... whatever Jarmanger needed. You didn't like that.

I didn't? Why not?

You had enrolled to learn from sages and perhaps become a sage yourself, not to become an errand-boy of the Council. When you expressed your unhappiness in my class, I offered to help.

You, an instructor, offered to help a student? Help me do what?

Why, to get you out of the Council's control, of course. Stronmar Academy's graduation ceremony was secretly a profane magical rite. It bound graduates' wills to the Council, forcing you to obey forever.

I helped you subtly negate that ritual. They never even realized you weren't under their control.

I helped quite a few students that year, but ultimately realizing that aiding individual students was taking too much time. Jarmanger's plans had swung into action, and I had to react. So the following year, after saving those students I could, I killed everyone in the school.

You what?!

It was a tough call, but the stakes were too high -- I had to act. Each of those students were as powerful as you are! Jarmanger already had scores of Prodigy graduates under his control, and I couldn't let him create more pawns.

I don't know why YOU'RE mad. Since you've lost your memories, I can confidently say you didn't know any of the people who died! Anymore...

Anyway, my plan didn't exactly work. I thought I'd used the perfect spell. But Ilvadele knew somehow! I've been on the run ever since. And at the same time, I have to single-handedly save the world from the fae!

Listen: I'm being direct with you because I respect you. You and your wife didn't agree with my decision, and it ended our friendship. But I need you to put that aside for now. You two, together, can probably stop Lavorel. Then I can empower you to stop Destriel. Don't worry -- I won't pit you against Jarmanger directly. He still thinks both of you are under his control.

My wife?!

Oh, hm, maybe you didn't wed. So then she would be your girlfriend, or your mate, or your partner or whatever term you use.

Rachel was your peer at Stronmar. I helped both of you escape Jarmanger's control.

She's still alive. And so far as I know, her memories are still intact. I don't know how your relationship unfolded after you left the school, but surely she would at least be able to help you recover your past.

This is a lot to take in.

Yes, well, please "take it in" on your own time. I am not being facetious about single-handedly saving the world -- I really mustn't daily. Why don't you seek out Rachel. One of my spies spotted her several months ago in Kur. It's gotten quite chilly there now, though: pack a coat. Speak to Nightshade, my spy in the region. He owes me a favor. Tell him you're calling it in.

After you find Rachel, tell Nightshade to contact me.

I'll consider it. I'm not promising anything.

I'm sure that you'll come to the right decision. Just as I'm sure you'll manage to get out of that cave alive. Goodbye.

Oh, and if you meet Selleiech, tell her that her service to me is complete.

Wait, what?
