Merriana and I hail from Dwyndarre. We survived the destruction, obviously, and spent several moons helping the wounded and imperiled. But I couldn't keep doing that -- it hurt too much to see the tree stumps every day. I just had to leave. I was a little surprised Merriana came with me, but I'm glad.

Oh, hello.
Did that "Baroness" send you? She has no grounds to evict us. We aren't leaving just because some human demands it. If we caved in to every petty local tyrant, we'd never have made it through that goblin-infested forest!
Look, we'll only be here for a few moons. Maybe more, maybe less -- but we won't be here forever. So you needn't get all worked up!
No, the Barroness didn't send me. Why does she want you gone?
It's not important. My name is Trasen. And yes, Merriana and I are weather witches. But you needn't worry! We're quite professionals at it. You aren't in any danger from us.
We've come from Dwyndarre, an elven city far from here. It's destroyed, you see, so we've gone traveling.
Interesting. How did you end up here?
Merriana heard some rumors that an old artifact is here. I came along to learn of the magical waterspout seen in this area!
A waterspout?
Yes, it happened several years ago. A huge localized column of water was seen leaving the sea and crossing acres of forest. And the locals here confirmed that it landed in the lake nearby.
Back in Dwyndarre, Merriana and I were Stormmasters. So its something we've been meaning to learn about.
Have you learned anything else about this waterspout?
The locals say that it happened before the Ranalon arrived. My belief is that the ranalon came via that waterspout somehow. Incredible, isn't it?
Does that mean the ranalon have weather magic?
I don't know much about the ranalon. They definitely don't use magic the way we do, but they may have some comparable weather spells... we can't rule that out.
Personally, I think they had some help: a very powerful wizard, or maybe even a god intervening directly. It's not supposed to happen, but it happens.
Actually...
Yes?
The Ranalon have been very uncooperative with us. I've... I've had to kill more than a few.
Maybe you'd have better luck? I just need to gather some more information about them.
Perhaps I can help, yes.

Trasen

The windstorms can get pretty loud at night. That's why I wear a Helmet of Calm Air to sleep. Merriana thinks I'm being a baby. I just like being comfortable!
Tell me more about Weather Witching.
That's what humans call our art. The elven word better translates to "weather work" or "weather crafting." It's a respected elven school of magic. Well, semi-respected.
Anyway, what did you want to know about it?
Can you explain the history of Weather Witching?
History? Oh, I don't know too much about that. My knowledge only goes back a few thousand years, and it hasn't changed too much in that time!
Well... there's been a few disastrous new spells invented in that time, granted.
And some catastrophic research disasters. That sort of thing. I don't mean to make light of the calamities that Weather Witching has caused. But let's be rational: it's not even close to the destructive legacy of simple fire magic!
The craft has just gotten an unfair reputation because of a few outside incidents.
How does it work? Is it powered by the gods?
No. Well... everything is powered by the gods, right? And there's an old elven story that says all the elven gods worked together to create weather: Irhetsu gave us wind, Arisetsu gave us warmth, Laeth gave us seasonal variations, and so on.
But weather witching isn't a priesthood. We don't need to worship any gods. We just take advantage of the systems the gods have created.
So its' a magical system?
Right! We study the way the magic of weather works so that we can manipulate it. We're more like fire mages than priests! Learning weather magic takes many years of study and experimentation, because it works differently for every practitioner.
It works differently for different people?
Right. Listen to me carefully, this is important: weather witching is about manipulating the weather. It's not about creating the weather. We change the weather, we don't create it!
That's the fundamental reason our magic is so potent, actually. We don't need to create a tornado from nothing: we just have to spin some air around.
But environmental manipulation magic is always delicate, because we are a part of that environment! This is especially important for flight.
How do weather witches fly?
To fly, you simply turn part of your body into wind. Easy as that!
Every novice weather witch yearns to fly, to be one with the wind and clouds. But it takes a while to master. There are three main things that will hold you back...
What are these three things?
The first hurdle is the magic of flight itself. You'll soon learn basic tempest magic, which will let you glide a bit, but it will still take a tremendous amount of concentration. As you master weather witching, you'll learn better and better tempest flight techniques.
Think of the first version of Tempest Flight as training wings.
Okay, what's the next hurdle?
The second hurdle is Tempest Energy. You store this in your body, and it's used up when you activate the tempest. You'll need to fill your body with tempest energy to fly, and refill it when it runs out.
The easiest way to refill your tempest energy is physical exertion: using weather magic in combat!
And what's the final hurdle to flight?
The last hurdle is your own body. It can only store so much tempest energy. At first, you will be very limited. There are exercises, meditations, rites, and secret techniques to increase your maximum. I can even teach a few of them!
Tell me about the tornadoes around here.
Oh, those guys? Yeah, they're true Elementals, not constructed Elementals. Hope that clears things up!
Wait, no, that didn't help me much.
Oh. Well, an Elemental is a sentient creature made of a certain type of mass or energy. Weather Witches can give sentience to windstorms, which means they're Elementals. But they're primitive "constructed Elementals" which only exist for a few seconds.
What does that mean? A "stable source?"
I'm sorry. I'm not simplifying enough! The windstorms around here were "born," they split off from a larger elemental storm. They and their progenitor storm are what we call "stable" because they don't disappear after a few seconds.
We can't control these Elementals, but we do know how to communicate with them. They're our friends. Two of them made the journey here with us from Dwyndarre; the third one found us here.

Trasen

The little tornadoes near here are our friends! We didn't create them. They just found us, learned we could talk with them, and chose to travel with us.

Trasen

I spent a few decades teaching weather work to neophytes. That was over a century ago, back when Merriana and I were married. I'm pretty rusty, but I can probably still teach some basics.

Trasen

Merriana and I hail from Dwyndarre. We survived the destruction, obviously, and spent several moons helping the wounded and imperiled. But I couldn't keep doing that -- it hurt too much to see the tree stumps every day. I just had to leave. I was a little surprised Merriana came with me, but I'm glad.

Trasen

Merriana was one of the weather overseers for Dwyndarre, ensuring proper rain amounts and appropriate seasonal weather. That's why she knows for certain that there were no warnings. This wasn't a meteror, a typhoon, or anything natural. Dwyndarre was attacked. I have my suspicions... but I won't slander others without proof.

Trasen

In happier times, my weather focus was on sleet variants. Wet sleet, dry sleet -- which is still wet, of course, just drier than wet sleet, extra-cold sleet, warmish sleet -- I've developed dozens of variations.

Saly nobody has ever asked me to conjure warmish sleet for them. Farmers prefer simple rain. But they've expanded my understand of the rules of weather! Slightly.
