Poetry Appreciation Overview

Poetry Appreciation is the ability to interpret and appreciate poetry.

In-Game Description

Skill in finding the meaning of poems, especially difficult and tedious ones.

Training Poetry Appreciation

  • To learn this skill, read a level 0 poetry book, a Poetry Primer, or be nearby when another player publicly reads a poetry book at the podium in the Chortling Beaver in Serbule. In the case of the latter, you must first rate the poem, then will receive a third of the XP afforded by reading the book to yourself.
  • More XP is gained from more valuable poetry books, which in turn require higher poetry appreciation in order to read. Typically, this requires the player to identify an Unidentified Poetry Book or Unidentified Poetry Chapbook, both of which are rare, difficult-to-find items, using their Art History skill. Once identified, the book can be read either by the player or publicly if the Poetry Appreciation requisite is met.

Poetry Appreciation Mechanics

Finding Books

Poetry books share a loot table with scrolls drops. Face of Death in Borghild and Visage of Demise in Rahu tend to drop many scrolls and therefore have a higher chance of dropping poetry books.

Book Identification

There are 4 different unidentified poetry books. The one that requires Art History 20 produces books from Set 1, 25 produces Set 2, 30 produces Set 3, and 35 produces Set 4. Gruzark's Chapbook comes from Gruzark. Note that some of the poetry book buffs below may be incorrect due to the August 2017 update until noted otherwise.

Poetry Podium

Poetry Podiums are public locations where poetry can be read aloud to others.

Here you can recite poetry. You'll need a poetry book (which is destroyed in the process). When you recite a poem aloud, you only earn 1/3 of the Poetry Appreciation XP that you'd get by reading it privately, but all other nearby players will ALSO earn that much Poetry Appreciation XP. You will also earn Oratory XP based on the number of people listening.

Instead of actually forcing players to read an entire book of poems, you will be prompted to enter a short poem yourself. You can write your own poetry or copy-and-paste poetry from elsewhere. (If you use others' poems, make sure to credit them!)

Nearby players will see your poem and can vote on whether they like it or not. You'll get general feedback about how your poem was received, but that feedback has no game-play effects. (Because everybody's a critic).

Trivia

Poetry Appreciation is probably a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy], given that the Vogons used "Poetry Appreciation Chairs", and the fact that all the Poetry books have descriptions talking about how awful they are.
