Poetry Appreciation Overview

Poetry Appreciation is the ability to interpret and appreciate poetry.

In-Game Description

Skill in finding the meaning of poems, especially difficult and tedious ones.

Training Poetry Appreciation

Learning Poetry Appreciation can be accomplished through two methods.

  • Read an appraised Poetry Book which requires Level 0 Poetry Appreciation.
  • Stand near a Poetry Podium while another character reads a Poetry Book and provide a rating for the read poem.

Continue leveling Poetry Appreciation through:

  • Reading appraised Poetry Books.
  • Listening to Poetry Books read by others at a Poetry Podium, and providing ratings for the poems read.

Poetry Appreciation Mechanics

Unidentified Poetry Books

Poetry Books can be found across Alharth, usually in an unidentified form. Rudimentary knowledge of Art History is required to appraise an unidentified poetry book. After appraisal, the discovered Poetry Book will require a specific level of Poetry Appreciation to read. Poetry Books have a chance of dropping from any creature that drops scrolls, so Undead and Arthropods are usually targeted by prospective Poetry Appreciators. In particular, the Undead Face of Death in Borghild and the stronger Visage of Demise found across Rahu tend to drop many scrolls and recipes, including poetry books.

Previously Identified Poetry

While most poetry is found in the form of unidentified books, a few items can be found that do not require identification.

Poetry Podium

Here you can recite poetry. You'll need a poetry book (which is destroyed in the process). When you recite a poem aloud, you only earn 1/3 of the Poetry Appreciation XP that you'd get by reading it privately, but all other nearby players will ALSO earn that much Poetry Appreciation XP. You will also earn Oratory XP based on the number of people listening.

Instead of actually forcing players to read an entire book of poems, you will be prompted to enter a short poem yourself. You can write your own poetry or copy-and-paste poetry from elsewhere. (If you use others' poems, make sure to credit them!)

Nearby players will see your poem and can vote on whether they like it or not. You'll get general feedback about how your poem was received, but that feedback has no game-play effects. (Because everybody's a critic).

— Serbule Poetry Podium

Poetry Podiums are public locations where poetry can be read aloud to others. It has become common for Guilds to work together to host public weekly Poetry Jam events.

Trivia

Poetry Appreciation is probably a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy], given that the Vogons used "Poetry Appreciation Chairs", and the fact that all the Poetry books have descriptions talking about how awful they are.
