You can learn the skill from Rappanel in South Serbule. (He's in the inn.) As you advance in Bard skill, you will also need to improve other skills, including performance, vocabulary, and poetry appreciation. Rappanel should give you enough information to proceed at each stage. We need feedback on how easy/hard it is to advance as a bard! We also need feedback on the bard's general abilities and playability. Keep in mind that the bard is designed to be a support character. It is definitely possible to solo with the bard, but it's not going to be as fast as some other skills.

Note: the bardic music tracks are draft versions, not the finalized versions. There are small issues with the looping of some tracks, plus some pops and crackles in a few sound effects. These small issues will be fixed soon.

One other note: Bardic music is implemented as a "performance". This has many subtle ramifications, but one useful feature is that if you tire of hearing the bardic songs, you can go into the Configuration window's Audio tab and reduce the number of audible performers to zero.

Bard Overview

Bard is a skill intended for Adventurers looking to provide support to their fellow travelers. The Bard skillset can only be used by humanoid races at this time, and travelers confined to Beast Forms will find it difficult, even impossible to use.

In-Game Description

Training Bard

  • Rappanel is a teacher for beginner Bards, and can be found along the old trade-route trail in Serbule Hills, inside the Tapestry Inn.
  • Percussa can raise the level cap of Bard from 51-60, and from 61-70. She can be found in Rahu. During the day she performs in front of the restaurant and in the evening she returns home to the hostile part of the city.
  • Raina unlocks 71-80.
  • Levels 71-80 and 81-90 may be unlocked by gaining favor with a mysterious entity deep beneath Povus.

Bard Mechanics

Bards can play with a lute and/or horn. Horn abilities focus on dealing damage, lute abilities are songs (see below).

Songs

Bards using a lute can play a song for constant effects like healing or damage. When moving, the song is interrupted so it is a good idea to pull groups of enemies or have a high range attack to pull. Switching to a different song will interrupt the current song.

Weapons

Lute instruments are all MainHand, while everything else is OffHand. Even though only the Lutes are tagged as Wooden, Druids may use all instruments.

Bards have access to the revival ability Hymn of Resurrection. To unlock and use this ability, a Bard must be wearing a Main Hand item with the proper treasure effect. The required treasure only appears on Epic or Legendary equipment at Levels 50 and 70. Although the ability can be learned from any Main Hand item with the treasure, a Lute with the treasure must be held to actually use the ability.
