Orcish Treatises Experiment
- "Demands of The Deceased"
Written in both Orcish and Human, this scroll is a generic "will" for the orc who carried it:
“
Demands of The Deceased
"My blade, my armor -- when these are of no use to me, give them to a young orc. My name
shall be given to my first-born. Do not mourn me for I have fulfilled my purpose." - Odd Orcish Scroll
“
A Strong Army Pleases Tast
Meant to be read to orcish armies by their commanders, this scroll reminds orcs of how best to please Tast, the god of war and armies. Although Tast has not graced a battlefield in hundreds of years, he still regularly bestows blessings and weapons upon his favored orcs, and announces his displeasure at generals that defy him. It's common practice for orcish
armies to make a sacrifice to Tast before beginning an attack. - Orcish Book About Gotkul
“
Gotkul's Battle at Green Hill
This book recounts the battle of Green Hill, where the orcish champion Gotkul routed a massive elvish army. It's too hyperbolic to be taken seriously, but it has ample woodcut
illustrations, and makes a decent read. - Orcish Book About Tast
“
History of Tast and His Foes
A complex book written by an orcish sage. It documents the known history of Tast, the god of war and armies. It depicts Tast as a giant orc, taller than a building, riding atop a horse so dark that it seems to be made of shadow. The most interesting portion of the book documents "Old Tast," the first version of the god, who loved chaos. Over thousands of years, Tast changed. He now despises chaos for its own sake, and prefers organization, structure, and planning. Why the change? It's impossible to say, but this book explains all the popular theories.
- Orcish Book About Thaumaturgy
“
Basics of Orcish Thaumaturgy
A difficult book in Orcish that explains the history and basic concepts of thaumaturgy. While too general to be useful in actually practicing thaumaturgy, it does give a solid grounding in
orcish magic theory. - Orcish Book About Trebuchets
“
The Battle of Gribnik Hill, vol 3: War Machines
This book manages to sap all the excitement out trebuchets and catapults. It does explain their basic construction and usage, but spends most of its pages recounting the bravery of the orcs that destroyed these devices at Gribnik Hill, a dwarven fortress. The final chapters are verbatim transcripts of torture sessions with defeated dwarven engineers -- technical information that is now known to be entirely false. All in all, the book is not destined to be a classic. - Orcish Book About Weird Mages
“
The Mutterers
This book is a scholarly treatise on the Mutterers, a secret society of orcish mages. While modern orcish armies are still struggling to incorporate battle mages and thaumaturges into their ranks, Mutterers go far beyond that, working in secret to master powerful sorceries such as the summoning of demons and demon-gates. The book ends with a chilling warning: most orcish armies probably have Mutterers secretly in their midst. Any thaumaturge or
battle mage could potentially be a Mutterer. - Orcish Book On Knife Tricks
“
Six Tricks With The Khopis
This thin book describes some classic sleight-of-hand techniques using the khopis, the orcish utility-knife. It has no real combat value, but the techniques can be used to win bar bets
among orcs. - Orcish Book On Weapons
“
Orcish Child's Weapon Guide
A book containing diagrams of weapons and armor, with all the parts named in Orcish.
Useful for learning the language, but not much else. - Orcish Book With Prayers
“
Orcish Child's Vow Book
A book of Orcish vows to Tast, the god of war and armies, meant to be memorized by young orcs. The book's repetitive nature and helpful illustrations make this a useful tool for learning
the Orcish language. - Orcish Field Medicine Guide
“
Orcish Field Medicine
This is a well-known guide to first aid in battle. It's studied carefully by all orcish soldiers. Orcish combat-medicine is extremely advanced and nearly anyone can learn a thing or two
from reading it. - Orcish Guard's Diary
“
Orcish Guard's Diary
The private journal of an orcish swordswoman, recounting her life as the personal bodyguard of a high-ranking officer. It's extremely boring, aside from some pretty rhyming couplets
interspersed here and there. - Orcish Language Reference
“
Orcish Reference Sheet
This scroll has some simple diagrams and pictures that let you translate common terms from Orcish into Human and vice versa. It focuses on basic concepts such as food, body parts,
weapons, and money. - Orcish Military Phrasebook
“
Orcish Military Phrasebook
A book containing orcish phrases translated into Human, Elven, and Goblin. Most of the phrasebook focuses on the topics of treating injuries, negotiating the enemy's surrender, and making fair trade arrangements. Memorable phrases include "I will kill you for this dishonor",
"If you deceive me I shall tear out your tongue", and "Grovel before me or die." - Orcish Novel
“
The Night The Humans Became Strong
One of the very few fiction novels written in Orcish. It is intended to be read aloud to young orcs at bedtime, so they are properly terrified. (Orcish sages believe that orcs learn best when they are fearful.) The story describes a hypothetical near-future scenario in which human
soldiers, enhanced with evil human magic, destroy orcish society. - Orcish Pronouncement
“
Decree on Mages' Rite of Passage
It's an order from an orcish general, dated from many years ago. It reads, "The rakshasa mages who attacked Gazluk City last week were killed, but the battle was too close. It is clear that we need more mages. There have been rumors that we might hire elven mercenaries to cast spells for us, but do not fear: that will NEVER happen. Orcs protect orcs! And orc magic is strong!
We must have more orc mages, but most of our young mages die in the Rite of Passage. My counsel tells me that this is because training in magic takes longer than training with weapons. Due to our pressing need, I declare a new law: children who show skill in magic may delay their Rite of Passage until age 17. These two extra years must be spent in study of magics and related trickery. When they take the Rite, they may not use a weapon, only magic.
If they survive, they shall be treated as true orcs." - Orcish Race Guide
“
Guide To The Weaker Races
Used by orcs that travel alone into enemy territory, this book describes all the non-orcish races, listing their strengths and weaknesses. It's full of incredibly racist propaganda and shouldn't be taken seriously, but the woodcuts are grotesque caricatures of each race, and
those are fun to look at. - Orcish Scroll About Magic
“
Orcish Rules For Killing Wizards
A scroll in Orcish that's full of propaganda about the evils of magic. It ends with some
actually-useful tips for fighting spellcasters. - Orcish Scroll About Swords
“
Guide to Orcish Sword Techniques
A scroll diagramming basic orcish swordfighting methods and pointing out their strengths
and weaknesses. - Orcish Scroll About Thaumaturges
“
Thaumaturges Can Have Honor
Part of the recent orcish effort to cultivate better magicians, this scroll is meant to be read aloud to orcish soldiers periodically, reminding them that orcish spellcasters are not
inherently weak and evil. Its efficacy in changing long-held orcish beliefs is dubious. - Orcish Thaumaturge's Journal
“
Orcish Thaumaturge's Journal
The personal journal of an orcish thaumaturge. It describes a life of struggle and humiliation, peppered with incredible power and awesome battles. While it could use an editor, it's
actually a pretty good read. - Orcish Treatise
“
Tast Against Gulagra
An orcish sage's dissertation about the difference between Tast, the god of war and armies, and Gulagra, the god of anarchy. While Tast and Gulagra were once close friends, their relationship is now strained, and this book aims to explain why. It's incomprehensibly boring. But if you're a
student of Orcish who wants to learn the more erudite vocabulary, it's a valuable find. - Orcish Warrior's Journal
“
Orcish Warrior's Journal
The personal journal of an orcish swordsman, recounting his life as a soldier. It is not very interesting reading, but the vocabulary is simple enough that it makes a good Orcish
language learning tool. - Orcish Weaponry Treatise
“
Sword Is Strength. Spear is Weakness!
This book attacks the trend of using spears and halberds in war, instead extolling the benefits of the sword. It is a classic Orcish text that has proven very polarizing in orcish military
society.
